When I first moved to Kansas City in 1986, at a party I pronounced it OH’-lath – which folks responded to with a peculiar combination of rolling the eyeballs and shifting weight while staring at their shoes – but nothing was said – as these were a generally ‘poh-lite’ bunch who considered it rude to correct others in public.

There is one notable exception – it seems that if you are selling used cars on cable TV commercials and want to fit in, you should pronounce it more like this:

Located in northeastern Kansas, Olathe is the fifth most populous city in the state, with an estimated population of 120,000 in 2008. It is the county seat of Johnson County, Kansas. In a study released in 2005, Johnson County had the third highest EBI (Estimated Buying Income) in the nation.

As a suburb of Kansas City, Missouri, Olathe is the fourth-largest city in the Kansas City Metropolitan Area. In 2008, the US Census Bureau ranked Olathe the 24th fastest-growing city in the nation. The same year, CNN/Money and Money magazine ranked Olathe #11 on its list of the “100 Best Cities to Live in the United States.”
